Polyphenolic compounds called flavonoids are produced ubiquitously in plants. Diets rich in flavonoid-containing fruits and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata, or basin big sagebrush, is known to produce 30-40 different flavonoids in its foliage. Using HPLC, we analyzed the different flavonoids found in sagebrush. Sagebrush extracts were fractionated over HPLC and were then applied to cultured HepG2cells. Cells treated with HPLC fractions showed significant (p<0.001) decrease in proliferation . This effect was observed in the whole sagebrush extract as well as the HPLC fractions where the subclass of flavonols is expected to reside. Treatment with sagebrush fractions also appears to reduce levels of free radicals in cultured cells.
