Modeling Choral Education: Action Research, Effective Instruction and Exemplary Assessment

AUTHOR: Peyton Fleming
FACULTY: Dr. Paul Moulton
DEPARTMENT: Music

ABSTRACT

In an effort to connect formal educational practices to choral education, this paper, using the structure of action research, produces a model for the choral education classroom. Action Research is a reflexive type of research that allows teachers to enhance their craft of teaching while serving the interests of the students. Using action research and effective instruction/assessment in the choral classroom helps students integrate knowledge from many different topics, which can benefit students in many different aspects of life. Through the lens of action research, teachers using evidence-based instruction and exemplary assessment can make the choral education experience more thoughtful, reliable, efficient and meaningful. Creating an effective model for choral music classrooms can greatly impact all students, and especially those involved in special education.
