You know about Netflix, let's talk about chill: A study examining the knowledge of sexual health-based topics in students at The College of Idaho

ABSTRACT

Abstinence-only is the only federally funded sex education program in the United States. Abstinence-only programs can lead to higher rates of STIs or teen pregnancies and places students at the risk of running into more negative sexual experiences. This means that students are not receiving the all-encompassing and comprehensive education that is necessary for them to maintain a healthy and knowledgeable sex life. This study examines the depth of knowledge of various sexual topics in 68 undergraduates at The College of Idaho. Students were given a survey that included two parts; open-ended questions asking about the age and information of which multiple topics were learned, and a multiple-choice portion taken from the Acquisition of Sexual Information Test in the Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures that tested students on their knowledge about sexual topics. Variables such as age, gender, religion, multiple choice score, and the type of sexual education (health and safety or abstinence) were investigated. Significant findings included higher scores on the multiple-choice portion for those who took the College of Idaho’s Gender and Sexuality course. Other variables such as religion, gender, parent's education, and age were not significantly correlated with the multiple-choice score.
