ASN-300.1 Southeast Asia: Continuity & Change 1.0 cr.

Fall.  Alt. years. This course is a prerequisite for the winter off-campus study course ASN 300.2 of the same name. This course, together with it's companion course ASN 300.2, count toward two of the following General Education Curriculum requirements, as per student choice, CULTURAL DIVERSITY (3 credits), HUMANITIES (either as Literature or Religion) (3 credits), and SOCIAL SCIENCES (3 credits).

ASN-300.2 Southeast Asia: Continuity & Change 5.0 cr.

Winter. Alt. years. An on-site interdisciplinary study of contemporary change in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia with an eye on the legacies and influences of the past. Four weeks of the course is conducted in Southeast Asia. Daily itinerary includes visits to historical and cultural sites, rural villages, government agencies, private sector firms, NGOs, and universities. Field experiences require students draw objective and normative conclusions about life and society in Southeast Asia. Course readings include fiction, non-fiction, scholarly texts, personal memoirs, and travel literature. This course, together with it's companion course ASN300.1, will count toward two of the following Liberal Arts Core requirements, as per student choice: CULTURAL DIVERSITY (3 credits), HUMANITIES (either as Literature or Religion), and SOCIAL SCIENCES (3 credits).

ASN-494 Independent Study 3.0 cr.

Fall, spring. Prereq.: permission. Research for capstone senior project to be conducted in consultation with a project advisor. Students must design, propose, and execute an original project to be formally presented to Asian Studies faculty and students.
