History Major
Consists of 33 credits including the following:
- Civilization:
- Students must take one Civilization course covering the premodern era from:
- HIS-200 Introduction to the History of the United States
- HIS-280 Historical Research: Historiography & Methods
- One course in each of the following areas:
- Asia - any one course from the following:
- Latin America - any one course from the following:
- Europe - any one course from the following:
- HIS-220 Introduction to the History of Modern Europe
- HIS-331 Ancient Greece
- HIS-332 Ancient Rome
- HIS-334 19th Century Europe
- HIS-337 Modern Russia & the USSR
- HIS-344 Medieval Europe
- HIS-347 18th Century Europe
- HIS-348 20th Century Europe
- HIS-349 Modern European Intellectual History
- HIS-353 Modern Britain
- HIS-400 Seminar in Historical Methods
or
HIS-480 Senior Thesis: Historiography and HIS-481 Senior Honors Thesis: Monograph. - Electives: 12 additional credits in history courses numbered 300 or 400.
Students pursuing a major in history are strongly advised to study at least one foreign language. Knowledge of French, Spanish and German is especially important for students who plan to attend graduate school. Students desiring teacher certification with a major in history must consult with a member of the Education Department.
History Minor
Consists of 18 credits, to include:
- Six credits of Western or World Civilization,
- HIS-200 Introduction to the History of the United States
- Nine additional credits in history, six of which must be upper-division
Classics Minor
Consists of 18 credits, to include:
- HIS-110 Western Civilization to 1000
- HIS-331 Ancient Greece
- HIS-332 Ancient Rome
- Six credits of either Greek or Latin
- Three additional credits approved by the History Department.
