Theatre Major and Minor

Theatre Major

Consists of 32 credits, including the following required courses:

• THE-115 Introduction to Theatre
• PHE-150 Jazz or Ballroom Dance or Rhythmic Skills or Ballet or Yoga
• THE-215 Fundamentals of Acting
• THE-240.1 Stagecraft
• THE-315 Principles of Directing
• THE-450 Senior Project
• Choose one course from:
  • THE-320 Theatre History I
  • THE-321 Theatre History II
  • THE-322 Theatre History III
• Six credits from the following*:
  • THE-101 Theatre Ensemble (may be repeated for credit)
  • THE-302 Applied Theatre: Lighting
  • THE-303 Applied Theatre: Costuming
  • THE-306 Applied Theatre: Scenery
    *NOTE: Six credits of THE-101 preferred

Additional course work to total 32 credits. Participation in main stage productions is expected. Special emphases in acting/directing, design/technology, music theatre or theatre management are available.

Theatre Minor

Consists of 22 credits, to include:

• THE-115 Introduction to Theatre
• THE-215 Fundamentals of Acting
• THE-240.1 Stagecraft
• THE-315 Principles of Directing
• Three credits from the following*:
  • THE-101 Theatre Ensemble (may be repeated for credit)
  • THE-302 Applied Theatre: Lighting
  • THE-303 Applied Theatre: Costuming
  • THE-306 Applied Theatre: Scenery
    *NOTE: Three credits of THE-101 preferred

Additional course work to total 22 credits. Participation in main stage productions is recommended.

Business & the Arts Major

As a joint program between the Business and Accounting department and the Performing and Fine Arts, this major offers students an opportunity to integrate an interest in the arts with an understanding of some of the practical applications of business. This major serves students preparing for careers in arts administration or management in music, theatre and the visual arts. It will also serve those who might want to create an independent gallery, ensemble, or theatre company.

Prerequisites

• MAT-112 Introduction to Statistics
• MAT 151 Calculus I
  or
  MAT-123.1 Applied Mathematics or equivalent

Core

Core course work in the Arts (5 to 7 credits in each of the three arts):

Art: (6 credits)

• ART-100 Drawing
  or
  ART-130 Design
• Three credits of art history

Music: (5-6 credits)

• MUS-100 Music Fundamentals
• And one of the following:
  • MUS-111 Introduction to Music Literature
  • MUS-103.1 Introduction to Music Theory
  • MUS-104 Baroque Materials of Music

Theatre: (6-7 credits)

• THE-115 Introduction to Theatre
• And one of the following:
  • THE-215 Fundamentals of Acting
  • THE-240 Stagecraft

Core course work in Business (17-19 total credits)

• One of the following:
  • BUS-100 Introduction to Business
  • BUS-200 Small Business Management
• ACC-221 Financial Accounting
• BUS-391 Legal Environment of Business
• And two of the following three
  • BUS-357 Organizational Behavior
  • BUS-360 Principles of Marketing
  • BUS-330 Principles of Finance

Students choose course work in one focus in the arts:

Visual Art Focus (12 - 15 credits):

• At least nine credits including both studio work and art history
• ART-403 Senior Project
• ART-494 Independent Study
  or
  ART-497 Internship

Music Focus (12 - 14 credits):

• MUS-311.1 Music History I
• MUS-312.1 Music History II
• MUS-313.1 Music History III
• Three credits of Applied Studies and/or Music Ensembles
• One to two credits MUS-494 Independent Study
  or
  MUS-497 Internship

Theatre Focus (13 - 18 credits):

• Three credits chosen from:
  • THE-320 Theatre History I
  • THE-321 Theatre History II
  • THE-322 Theatre History III
• at least six credits chosen from:
  • THE-101 Theatre Ensemble
  • THE-239 Stage Management
  • THE-270 Theatre & Arts Management
  • THE-315 Principles of Directing
  • THE-340 Theatre Design
  • THE-355 Acting Shakespeare
  • THE-390 Creative Drama
• one to three credits from one of the following:
  • THE-450 Senior Project
  • THE-494 Independent Study
  • THE-497 Internship
• IND-499 Interdisciplinary Business/Arts Seminar (1 credit)
