REL-203   Hebrew Bible: Prophecy & Wisdom 3 credits

An examination of selected books from the second and third main sections of the Hebrew Bible ("Prophets" and "Writings," respectively), with special attention to the two movements in Hebrew culture which produced this literature: the prophetic movement and the wisdom movement - each with very different assumptions, approaches and messages. Students will look at the literature these movements produced in relation to its own social-cultural-historical contexts, at how the movements changed and interacted over time, and at the subsequent understandings and uses of this literature in Jewish and Christian traditions. (Not open to students who have previously taken REL-111 Old Testament Introduction.)
