Kingdoms of Rot

Author(s): Thomas Newby

Presentation: performance

Throughout the 2010-2011 school year, I have been writing a full length play that analyzes the post-modern man in his attempt to live in a world without meaning. Kingdoms of Rot is the story of Travis, a pill-popping recluse who finds disgust in the lies humanity has to tell itself in order to continue functioning. When Deborah, his long-time girlfriend (and last connection to the outside world) leaves him, he snaps and collapses inside of his own head. The rest of the play takes place in the Kingdom of Rot, a fluid space that reflects Travis’ inner conflict and self-loathing. Kingdoms of Rot takes us into the mind of a man who is fighting to cope with the unforgiving and senseless nature of the universe. I will present on the thematic material the play discusses. There will also be performances of a few key scenes of the piece.
