"Icon"

Author(s): Danny Henson

Presentation: oral

"Who does your art save?" After a life changing experience with Campus Ministries working among the destitute of San Francisco, I sought a way to convey everything I had learned using the tools available to me, primarily writing. At first I experimented with a creative nonfiction account adapted from journals kept during my service. As the project evolved I realized that the pathway for the ideas I wanted to convey was to be found in the form of a fiction short story, loosely based on my time in the Bay Area. The result is a tale of a wayward agnostic missionary encountering a bipolar vagrant convinced that he is the antichrist (typical buddy comedy, right?). This piece has been previously presented at this year's National Undergraduate Literature Conference at Weber State University and was well received by other student writers and moderating professors. A reading of "Icon" as abridged for conference will be given, followed by the allotted time for questions
