Racial Attitudes of College Students

Presentation: poster

Racial Attitudes of College Students The purpose of our study is to better understand the experiences that contribute to the racial attitudes of college students. An attitude is simply how someone feels towards a particular person or object. In our study, we measured both explicit attitudes using The Tolerance of Human Diversity Instrument (Byrd, 1993) and implicit attitudes using the Implicit Association Test, a computerized test that measures very small reaction differences in response to making simple judgments about individuals from different backgrounds. To measure experiences we used the The Life Experiences Questionnaire which we developed. Our pilot data indicate a lack of correlation between a student’s explicit and implicit attitude toward another ethnic group indicating that asking students directly about their racial beliefs may not accurately index how comfortable they are with that group. We will present our data on what life experiences are related to an individual’s implicit and explicit attitudes towards other ethnic groups.
