Another Turn of Time

Author(s): Chelsea Larsen

Presentation: poster

One of the things that people find troubling about poetry is its lack of real boundaries. As Mary Oliver says when discussing the syntax of poetry, “in the writing of a poem nothing is wrong.” She suggests that allowing variety to direct the formation of poems is more important than having a habitual way of writing. This series of four poems, titled Another Turn of Time, and presented at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference at Weber State University this spring, takes a creative approach to examine how changes occur in various aspects of life through time. Each poem has a common theme of someone overcoming a state of inadequacy or beginning a new phase in life. The subjects of a failing marriage, a child’s reaction to dysfunctional parents, an angry boyfriend’s hostility challenged and subdued, and the first stages of the fall season each suggest a revolution of sorts in their corresponding poems. The transformation of self and a renewed awareness of the beautiful mystery of life is portrayed in this series through multi-faceted depictions of the power of time. Diane Raptosh was our group’s faculty advisor and the trip was funded by the Student Research Grant.
