Music Composition

Author(s): Paula Tuckness

Presentation: display

Recently having taken the Counterpoint class during the winter term at the College of Idaho, I have gained a greater understanding of the way in which up to four voices are written together. We studied and wrote Renaissance music, and followed the changes in musical style up to the Baroque Era, and ended class writing our own fugue. I have learned different guidelines for thinking harmoniously, but hope to continue studying this aspect of music with as much intensity as we did in studying counterpoint. I have had more freedom in writing my Brass Trio, yet I found myself relying heavily on the counterpoint class, and even putting a fugue in this term's composition. I plan to put together a live performance of this small brass trio for the composition recital. My piece is titled "Tuckness Turn," was written for trumpet, French horn, and trombone, which we have learned to write for over the course of this term.
