Improvising Evolution: A Composition on the Evolution of Jazz

Author(s): Anthony Parry

Presentation: performance

The 20th century has seen the creation and development of many musical styles that continue to shift and morph. Using the medium of a jazz combo, I have composed a piece of music that incorporates fragments of nearly every style of jazz in a way to reflect the ever evolving genre. As a very recent form of music, jazz has gone through rapid and incredible changes from early ragtime, to swing in the 30’s, bebop in the 40’s, and to modal and free jazz in the 60’s. These forms have continued to evolve and can be seen in the works of contemporary jazz composers such as local composer Rob Walker, the pianist Jason Moran, or the famous trio The Bad Plus who incorporate every style of jazz in their music. My composition will be performed by my jazz combo consisting of alto saxophone, electric guitar, electric bass, and drums. This performance will be followed by a brief question and answer session.
