Food Ideology, Regulations and Sense of Place: A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Italian and American Cheese-making

“Food Ideology, Regulations and Sense of Place: A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Italian and American Cheese-making” explores the artisanal cheese-making process from start to finish, analyzing how the variables of regulations, environmental ideology and the ideology of food value affect the process. A cross-cultural comparison between a goat cheese farmstead in Parma, Idaho and a farmstead in Calabria, Italy will analyze differences and provide insight into the cultural contexts in which artisanal cheese-makers are attempting to make, distribute and market their cheese. To do this, I employ traditional anthropological methods including participant observation and interviews. The research being presented is the initial conclusion drawn from the fieldwork done on the farm in Parma.
