Gender and the Perception of Attractiveness Do women and men perceive attractiveness differently? Evolutionary theorists have suggested that men value physical characteristics while women are more interested in markers of success. A recent study found that men rated humble looking women as more attractive, while women rated proud looking men more highly. We attempted to replicate this finding. We manipulated how proud or humble an individual description will influence the rating of attractiveness in males and females. We used a simulation of an online dating vignette which was rated by 40 College of Idaho students (20 male and 20 female) to investigate the difference in ratings between male and female students. However, contrary to the evolutionary prediction, females’ results indicated that they perceived the humble as more attractive than the proud males.
