There are a growing number of brain training programs marketed for children. However, it is unclear how well these programs work and whether they work for all children or for only typically developing children. We report the results of a pilot study focusing on the training of working memory in learning disabled elementary school children. 10 students at Van Buren Elementary School participated in up to 14 sessions of working memory training. Working memory is the act of simultaneously storing and processing information. We measured these children before and after training on measures of fluid reasoning and attention. Some participants improved on the training task while others did not. There was some evidence that the children improved on fluid reasoning and attention. However, it is difficult to interpret these results with such a small sample and no control group. Nonetheless, these results are encouraging for conducting larger controlled studies and overall the students and the teachers were positive about the experience.
