Harry Potter Medley for Performance Harp

Author(s): Victoria Agee

Presentation: performance

The magnitude of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter phenomenon can be experienced through all forms of media. In film, it was John Williams who composed the first score, creating the iconic thematic material. Throughout each of the subsequent seven movies featuring three other composers, the music retained themes characteristically easy to recognize. These pieces have been transcribed for numerous solo instruments. However, when it came to bringing together melodies from each film, no such piece existed for the harp. Using orchestral scores, reductions, and aurally transcribing themes I could not find music for, I took what I believed to be the most representative theme of each movie and compiled them into a single performance piece idiomatic for my instrument. As the piece progresses, the tone shifts from something very light to a darker more somber attitude, reflecting a similar movement in the content of the books themselves. While many of these themes may seem simplistic, due to the nature in which the harp is played, they are incredibly difficult technically. This provides not only a challenging experience for the performer but for the transcriptionist as well.
