The Effects of Gender Differences in Preschool

Author(s): Madison Crookham

Presentation: oral

Does gender affect how well children learn in preschool? This depends on the teaching strategies that the preschool teachers use and how well each gender responds to these strategies. This project looks at how each gender learns most efficiently and whether standard teaching practices have responded to these traits. The Caldwell Idaho YMCA preschool was the location of the project for a span of 3 months. I used participation observation as my primary methodology going into the classroom at least twice a week to work with the women teachers and children while also observing behavior and reactions. The research has shown that at this point in the school year girls on average are further along in their education. With the given data my conclusion is that gender differences do affect a preschooler's ability to learn in the classroom. Teaching techniques in preschool seem to favor feminine qualities and in the end supports educational growth more for girls than boys. Preschool is an important step for any individual's education and if it can be shown that preschools do not support males as well as females then changes must be made to give all children an education that equally develops their abilities.
