Is a preference for hierarchy associated with explicit prejudice towards the gothic subculture?

Author(s): Keri McCarthy

Presentation: poster

Negative attitudes towards members of the gothic subculture (alterophobia) are an important new area of research. Studies on alterophobia have investigated prejudice and bullying towards members of the gothic subculture. This issue is important because of concerns about harm done by bullying, including the negative mental health impact on members of the gothic subculture. The present study specifically investigated the relationship between explicit prejudice against the gothic subculture and social dominance orientation, which is the preference for maintaining strict hierarchy in society. There were 61 undergraduate students, and they were asked to fill out questionnaires measuring social dominance orientation, explicit prejudice towards the gothic subculture, and demographics. A positive correlation was found between explicit prejudice and social dominance orientation. This result is important to future investigations of alterophobia, and how it could be reduced.
