Sexual Harassment and Self Image

Author(s): Marie Ristow , Brittany Davis

Presentation: poster

Is there a relationship between sexual bullying and harassment in high school and body image issues? What about in college or work environments? And are these phenomena related? While much research has been done concerning sexual bullying and harassment in high school, we are not aware of any research concerning possible repercussions of these experiences. The present research attempted to partially address these questions by comparing results of sexual harassment questionnaires and body consciousness scales from both high school and the past six months. A total of 66 subjects recruited from the College of Idaho and social media completed five separate questionnaires. The results indicate significant correlations between the results of the sexual harassment questionnaires and the body consciousness scales. This study highlights the need for longitudinal research that can assess the development of body consciousness as it relates to sexual bullying and harassment.
