Romantic attraction: Are people really as shallow as we think?

Author(s): Anna Sewell , Courtney Zeff

Presentation: poster

The present study aimed to determine what factors are important in choosing a romantic partner. Past research has shown that when physical attractiveness is accounted for, as in the Mate Value Inventory, it is more predictive in potential partner selection, as opposed to simple personality measures alone. Our own previous study found that most people preferred to partner with someone with a similar personality type to their own. In the present study, we tested the relative power of personality similarity and physical attractiveness. As in our previous study, control subjects (who received only personality descriptions) tended to report that they desired partners who were similar in personality to themselves. However, those in the experimental condition (who received pictures paired with personality descriptions) tended to choose ideal romantic partners who had been previously ranked as the most attractive of the potential choices instead of those similar in personality to themselves.
