Art With an Occupation

Author(s): Ty Michael McCurdy

Presentation: display

I began throwing pottery over five years ago. Since then, my passion and interest in the art of ceramics has continued to grow and form a life of its own, independent from the contemporary. I find inspiration in the use of my finished pieces, whether they hold flowers, candles, or a set of car keys. The use of my art allows it to embed itself into one’s life seamlessly. I find inspiration for new, unique designs and techniques primarily through online websites, such as Youtube, or Reddit. Doing so has allowed me the opportunity to learn and grow as an artist. I use stoneware clay, and a scattered use of firing techniques. I most often use stoneware glazes, and enjoy experimenting with different tape and adhesives to give a unique and pleasing design to my art. I tend to find that the result of straight lines across a curved surface allows the viewer to grasp the structure of the artwork more clearly. For my senior art exhibition I focus on art with an occupation. I enjoy the art we take for granted, such as a bowl holding spare keys, and vases that fade into the window seal through time.
