There have been very few investigations into what form of media individuals prefer when it comes to matters of sexual arousal. This inventory serves as a means of rectifying that and assessing matters of preference. In the first study utilizing the new measure, we collected data from 26 males, 42 females, and 2 individuals identifying as “other” at the College of Idaho. The two hypotheses guiding this inventory are as follows: Heterosexual men prefer pornography and heterosexual women prefer erotic literature. The data have shown that the first hypothesis regarding heterosexual men is largely supported while there is significant divergence in the preferences of heterosexual women. A more complete analysis is in progress. The creation of this inventory is the first step in looking at how arousal can impact various forms of human functioning (e.g., concentration on a cognitive task) and future research efforts will utilize this initial set of data in making methodological choices.
