Medical Missionary Society in China: A Gateway to a Missionary Movement

Author(s): Anabel Keller

Presentation: oral

During the early 19th century, a new form of missionary work was introduced to Southeastern China. Medical missions were developing at this time in order to aid basic missionary work. The Medical Missionary Society of China was conceived in the city of Canton where some British and American evangelical Protestants were already located. The premise of this society was to spread the word of god through the diffusion of western knowledge such as healing bodies. The Society had two main goals; one was to spread the word of God, the other purpose was to heal bodies. This study examines how the Medical Missionary was perceived to be an extension of missionary work through its institutions and leaders. In this paper I will be looking at the duality of the Society and its proclamations versus its actions thereafter and why the two may be so different. The Society has two main goals; one was to spread the word of God, the other purpose was to heal bodies. In many ways the society used the Medical Missionary Society as a tool in their efforts to convert the native Chinese.
