The Battle of the Borderlines (Farmland preservation vs Urban development)

Author(s): kyle Evans

Presentation: oral

Despite Idaho’s large representation for farmers, growing development within the treasure valley has resulted in farm land conversion into housing development. Over the past 30 years Idaho’s total farm and ranch-land has declined by around 7,000 acres a month. The State population has increased by 60% since 1990, demanding for urban and commercial growth and development. Local government has shown to have 21 members of its legislative branch that have affiliations with farming. Using scholarly resources, and speaking to represented of both sides of the conflict, I will investigate the political representation of farmer compared to that of the urban developers, and argue the prospects of development, increase of wealth and availability of jobs will always overcome the political representation for farmers. The results for political representation of urban development are being collected yet the prediction is that they are a well-organized persuasive group that has lobbyist able promote policies pertaining to their agenda. In conclusion, the prospects of development are a lucrative business, bringing money and jobs for the people of Idaho, making it hard opposition to create a case for the farmers whose land is prime targets for urban development.
