Malonyl radical kinetics

Author(s): Joao Cardoso

Presentation: oral

Malonyl Radical kinetics Malonyl type radicals have typically been generated photolytically from esters of bromomalonic acid; however, oxidative techniques have been found to generate these radicals directly from the parent esters. A comparison of these two methods of radical generation applied to benzylic hydrogen atom abstraction reactions demonstrated a significant difference in their sensititivy to substituion on the aromatic ring (rho = -0.87 versus -0.65 respectively). This difference likely stems from bromine atom participation in the former photolytic reaction methodology. This study employs potassium carbonate in the photolysis to exclude bromine atom participation in the reaction. A comparison of the electronic sensitivity toward benzylic hydrogen atom abstration under these photolytic conditions with those listed above will be presented.
