The Growing Impact of Everyday Machismo

Author(s): Nick Brunker

Presentation: oral

Machismo, the social construct of masculinity, is a very highly studied topic in today’s ever changing social landscape. Scholars currently focus on the effects of machismo on women; I instead aim to demonstrate how machismo has greatly affected Nicaragua’s success in the global market. The above average rates of machismo in Nicaragua, has greatly hindered the social and economic development of the country. To demonstrate this, I examine the economy and international relations, and connect them to different rates of machismo, such as the rates of domestic violence, and the presence of equal rights laws. This study furthers scholarship of machismo by arguing that machismo not only negatively affects the women of Nicaragua, but also the country as a whole.
