Evolution of Gender Roles in Spain

Author(s): Cynthia Esparza

Presentation: oral

In the medieval era of Spain, there are different gender roles than in contemporary society, and women were treated as inferiors to men. This could be interpreted as “standard” gender roles for Spain but I will be comparing the treatment of women from medieval Spain with those of women in Spain during the Golden Age . I will compare a medieval epic poem and a play from Spain’s Golden Age to consider the evolution of gender roles in Spain. El Cid looks at gender roles as Women’s inferiority to men during the medieval period while El Juez will look at gender roles from a Golden Age perspective. By comparing gender roles from the medieval period and Golden age we could see how dramatically gender roles have changed over time and compare them to Spain’s gender roles today. (This presentation will be given in Spanish)
