The Selfie Reflection: The Modern-day Narcissus

Author(s): Hope Brassey

Presentation: poster

Social media is easily accessible through smart phones, tablets and computers. It is now easier to spend copious amounts of time posting selfies and booting personal image, which can come off as narcissistic. This begs the question, is there a relationship between social media usage and narcissism? The present study examines the relationships between narcissism, social media use, and selfie taking and posting behaviors. The Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and a new selfie questionnaire were used. The subjects of the study were 116 adults recruited through Facebook and the College of Idaho Human Subjects Pool. All data were collected online. The results showed a significant correlation between social media addiction and the number of selfies posted to social media sites in a week, as well as a significant correlation between narcissism and the number of selfies taken in a week. As we continue to use social media for things like self-image, future generations may be more prone to having higher narcissistic personality inventory scores.
