Many can hold a vision in their mind’s eye. Humans hold the ability to think of places that no one has ever seen, and we can express them through various forms of art. Concept art lays the groundwork for bigger stories by setting mood and narrative through colors, shapes, placements and overall composition. My series focuses on the creation of an imaginary over-world consisting of underwater seascapes, ethereal skies, mountaintops, dark caves and forests populated with man-made objects. Real and imaginary creatures inhabit these locations, brought to life through landscape painting. Background elements flow from one painting to the next, and are meant to be viewed as a sprawling map contributing to a larger story. A number of influences shape my techniques, style, and overall composition, ranging from renaissance painters such as Hieronymus Bosch, to illustrators like Ralph McQuarrie, the lead concept artist for the original Star Wars. A PowerPoint presentation of “in-progress” shots of concept landscapes will provide a deeper look into how visions and coherent worlds can be created and conveyed through a variety of acrylic works
