PLURFECT: Why Women Ravers Feel they Participate in Rave Culture

AUTHOR: Annika Klein
FACULTY: Dr. Jen Wallin-Ruschman
DEPARTMENT: Psychology

ABSTRACT

Since its origination from disco, rave culture has grown and shifted throughout the decades. One thing that has not changed is the negative stigma surrounding raves such as drug use and normalization. This has left other potentially positive aspects of rave culture ignored. The definition of "rave" has shifted to be an umbrella term that includes events such as commercialized EDM music festivals, which is vastly different from the original rave which was secretive, underground, and a form of resistance. The first goal of this qualitative study was to explore why ravers feel they continue to participate in this shifting rave culture. Building off of this, the few qualitative studies that exist touch on how ravers feel raving has changed their view of those around them or how they feel towards raving as a whole but have not acknowledged how participants feel raving has potentially altered their view of themselves. The second goal of this study was to explore this understudied area. This was accomplished through distribution of an open-ended qualitative survey to a private Facebook group of women ravers from around the United States and Canada. Women completed the survey and major themes were identified through thematic content analysis.
