A Male Lens on Gender Equality

ABSTRACT

Research suggests that although most Millennial men understand and embrace the underlying principles of gender equality, there still exists some obscurity regarding why gender equality remains an important topic of discussion today. In addition, there has not been much depth of research on Generation Z men and their views on gender equality. Using open-ended surveys, I explored the perceptions of gender equality and feminism amongst 48 men aged 18-25 years old (Gen Z) at The College of Idaho. Surveys were created and completed using Google Forms, and recruitment was through social media, and SONA software. My research question was “How do Gen Z men perceive gender equality and feminism”. Data analysis was done using a thematic content analysis of the responses from the surveys. Results indicated a general agreement among participants that all societies should strive towards gender equality. However, differences in the current relevance of the gender equality movement arose, with some participants believing gender equality has already been achieved, and others disagreeing. Understanding how men in Generation Z view gender equality and feminism is the first step in learning how to change behaviours and ideologies that perpetuate gender inequality.
