Center for Experiential Learning

The Center for Experiential Learning (CEL) seeks to maximize student potential by providing a bridge to life beyond college. CEL helps students through a process that is recognized as developmental and starts with a freshman orientation. Individual career counseling focuses on developing the self-awareness that is essential to realizing goals--graduate school or employment. We strongly encourage career exploration in the freshman and sophomore years followed by experiential learning in the junior and senior years. We recommend that students meet with us annually to assess their development of knowledge, skills, and abilities with respect to their established goals. We also provide direct feedback on personal statements, resumes and cover letters.

CEL maintains a career resource library. The campus is linked through the Idaho Career Information System (CIS), a computer network that provides access to career exploration, graduate schools, and scholarship information. We maintain contacts with alumni, business, government and other organizations. Career Services also coordinates on-campus interviews with potential employers.

Credential files are maintained for teacher education majors at a nominal fee. Education graduates are encouraged to maintain a credential file from their degree-granting college or university.

Job listings including external, part-time and summer employment opportunities are available on the college website.

Internships

According to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the link between summer internship programs and full-time jobs keeps getting stronger. Between 2001 and 2004 there was a 13% increase in the number of interns who went from summer internships to full-time employment. Repeatedly, we hear from students that their internship experience is one of the most significant experiences of their college education outside the classroom.

Internships are planned, structured, supervised experiences that enable students to utilize and develop skills for organizing information and solving routine problems expected of career professionals. Internships offer off-campus learning experience that engages a student in the practical application of academic study while testing and honing problem solving, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills within an employment setting. Some internships are already established; students design others. Internships are offered every term, including summer.

CEL encourages students to consider “high-power” internships during summer break that are generally located outside of the state in large metropolitan areas. Many provide a stipend and require early application. These internships may be researched in CEL (Hendren Hall) or viewed online at the college website.

Study Abroad

Overseas study for an academic year, semester, or summer is strongly encouraged for all Albertson students who are in good academic standing and sufficiently mature to benefit from such study. Experiencing institutions and practices of another culture enriches any major.

Albertson has entered into affiliations with various study abroad providers enabling Albertson students to study in 70 countries in any discipline through internationally recognized programs and foreign institutions.

Study abroad information can be found at online at the college website or by contacting:
