The college carries out its responsibility of campus safety seriously. Regrettably, colleges are not immune to the ills of society. No college campus is free of crime. At Albertson College efforts are made to keep the community aware of any criminal activities that may occur, and to recommend means of reducing the incidence of such activities. Safety is a community activity. Even with its resources, Campus Safety officers will not always be aware of all incidents that may occur on campus. Relying on Albertson community members to report all activities that may appear unusual or suspicious is extremely important. You are encouraged to call the Campus Safety Department regardless of how insignificant or trivial an incident may appear.
Even though it might feel very safe, crime will occur on campus just as it does anywhere else. Campus safety is a shared responsibility. The college takes preventative action, but ultimately it boils down to the willingness of individual students to take the simple precautions necessary to protect their safety. Some of these precautions are:
- Never walk alone at night. Although the college has good security for keeping out trespassers, statistics show that fellow students will commit most campus crime.
- Be careful with your personal information, including your student ID number, social security number, telephone number, and credit card numbers, especially over the telephone. When you allow people access to your personal information, you leave yourself vulnerable to everything from practical jokes to harassment and fraud.
- Carry your keys and lock up your valuables, especially your room, car, and bicycle. Theft is a crime of convenience and is the most predominant crime on most campuses. It is also the most preventable.
- Never prop open exterior doors. Propped doors invite intruders into your building, putting you and other residents in danger.
- Report crimes as they occur and suspicious activities. Albertson College relies on all community members to report all activities that appear unusual or suspicious.
Campus Safety also works closely with the residence life staff to provide crime awareness programming throughout the academic year. The offices of Residence Life and Campus Safety arrange seminars and workshops on topics such as self-defense, fire prevention, personal safety awareness, and other aspects of crime prevention.
